The Truth About Referrals (and why I still recommend things anyway)

Other travellers often ask me for recommendations when I’m away —

Which trips have you done?

Where’s good to eat?

Is there a pharmacy nearby?

I do exactly the same when I travel.

But lately I’ve noticed something different.

People who haven’t travelled solo yet have started asking me too. People who want to go… but haven’t quite taken that first step.

And that’s actually a big responsibility.

So yes — I tell them what’s worked for me.

Which companies I’ve used.

Which hotels I’ve loved.

Which experiences felt worth it.

Because travel is personal. What works brilliantly for one person might not work at all for someone else. I love walking on holiday — but I’m not about to climb Snowdon for fun.

And I only recommend what I’ve experienced myself.

I might mention things I’ve heard about — but I’ll always make that distinction. Because second-hand recommendations can be very hit-and-miss.

As I’ve shared more recommendations, a few people have asked:

“What’s in it for you?”

Completely fair question.

The honest answer?

Sometimes I do receive a small thank-you. It might be a voucher, a future discount, an upgrade… or occasionally — my personal favourite — a box of Prosecco 🍾

But here’s the important bit:

It doesn’t cost you anything.

Your price doesn’t change whether you use my link, mention my name, or go directly yourself.

And honestly? What matters most to me isn’t whether a referral benefits me. It’s whether it works for you.

Because the real win is someone coming back from a trip feeling proud of themselves for going.

So if I ever share a referral link — I’ll always say so.

No sneaky business. Ever.
