Expectations are high, even if it is subconsciously….. I’ve never booked I trip I didn’t want to go on!
And although I don’t get ‘excited’ pre-trip in a traditional ‘springer Spaniel puppy’ type way, as the aircraft pushes back I do start thinking more about all the things I’ve looked into doing…. All thats to come.
My recent trip to Gibraltar, we left Gatwick to glorious blue skies …. Landed to cloud, hint of rain and quite windy (we were lucky to land!)… this wasn’t what I’d ordered!
But weather around the Rock can change quickly.
I chose to walk to my hotel, get my bearings straight away…. And walking across a live runway was something I did just have to do. ✅ It was cool!
Hotel was lovely, but the streets were packed – the curse of the visiting cruise!
I had two full days planned to explore the Rock. The Cable Car is out of action at the moment and wont be back in service until 2027 – so I knew there would be a far bit of hiking and walking involved – luckily that is something I love to do.
The Rock was quiet so I had both the WWII tunnels and Great Siege tunnels to myself … then the hard trek over to The Windsor Suspension bridge and St Michaels Cave. Not many apes around enroute, which wasn’t much of a disappointment.
But …the Windsor bridge … I don’t know why but I expected a big bridge across quite a wide gorge …. Nope … I saw it from a higher path and to get to it I would have to walk down the rock, cross the bridge and then hike all the way back … was it worth it …. Not in my book.
So the day’s final slog upwards to St Michael’s Cave … arrived …. Cave closed due a power failure.
So I climbed down and visited Europa point and then walked back to my hotel .
It definitely wasn’t the perfect day, but I enjoyed it – and thats the most important thing. I adapted my day to the conditions of the day and the variables that were thrown my way.
I still covered over 13miles with 32k steps and climbed the equivalent of 117 flights of stairs, made memories and worked up an appetite for a great meal…..
And that’s the thing with travelling…
It’s very rarely about one perfect moment.
It’s about all of it —
the bits that go to plan,
the bits that don’t,
the things you expect…
and the things you really don’t.
Because when you look back, you don’t remember a “perfect day”.
You remember the whole experience.
And this one… for all its little quirks…
was a good one.
